An initiative of the German Ministry of Education and Research. Peter Heudtlaß: Mapping vulnerability – MDGs and Earth observations in disaster epidemiology. Rupert Gerzer: Telemedicine for remote areas and in emergency situations

B5: Health: Results and recommendations: Overview 1.Different perspectives highlighted 1.General scope 2.Funding perspective 3.Data avaliablity and access 4.Telemedicine examples from the field

Europe-wide and North America Health Research Networks in Sub-Saharan Africa The consultation: Whom we talked to Nationwide Multilaterals Africa-wide

African University Health Research Networks in Sub-Saharan Africa Attempting a scenario (2) - Possible basic elements African Research Center African Hospital German Research Institution Prerequisites: 1.German institutions participate 2.the African Institutions contribute appropriately (money, ressources, administrative requirements) 3.Networks are backed by African Authorities Innovation (scientific, societal, economic)

MDGs and disaster epidemiology … 4 out of 8 goals are health-related (hunger, child mortality, maternal health and infectious diseases) … least progress in populations affected and displaced by conflict and disasters (an estimated 700m people per year!)

Challenges (1): data availability More and better spatial data needed: -endemicity of parasites (vectors) and diseases? Sampling of displaced populations -Producing sampling frames from satellite imagery -> recent research conducted by Chris Grundy (LSHTM) and MSF Challenges (2): health data collection Challenge (3): methods Comparative and trend analysis with non-systematic samples in space and time from multiple sources -Bayesian Networks? Trends in Under Five Mortality in different Ethiopian provinces (source: CEDAT) IDP camp in Sudan, satellite picture (source: globalsecurity.org)

Highly developed areas Remote areas Mobile applications Quality of life Quality of care Time Telemedicine in the mobile Society - Challenges -

Suggestions for future (satellite based) telemedicine projects Establish COTS and KISS projects: sustainability Establish teleteaching projects Link with International Academy of Astronautics e.g., joint Position Paper on „Telemedicine for emerging Countries“ Link with International Society of Telemedicine and eHealth „…making eHealth Work“, Nov , Abuja, Nigeria

B5: Health: Results and recommendations: Recommendations 1.Improve Website 1.Increase user friendliness 2.Links to existing resources 2.Promote exchange of data and interoperability of data 3.Provide a better communication tool for information exchange and contact brokerage 4.Connect with International Academy of Astronautics (IAA )
