Critical Analysis We are going to analyse a famous painting. How does the artist create an unsettling atmosphere? Consider: Facial Expression Gesture Use of light and colour Composition: position of things in the picture and background

Self-portrait (The Desperate Man), Gustave Courbet was a famous French painter in the nineteenth- century. He was a realist painter and he painted lots of self- portraits. Courbet occupies an important place in 19th century French painting as an innovator. He put so much of himself onto the canvas. In one self-portrait, he is long-haired and delicate. In another, he tears his hair, wide-eyed and wild, like Johnny Depp’s pirate. In “Self-Portrait with Pipe” we see him as a thoughtful dreamer.

Empathy Empathy is the ability to identify with a place or person You are going to use the painting as the basis for a piece of empathy writing. Look at the painting again and consider the accompanying questions. Use the First Person (I, my...)

Task-You now need to write as if you are the man in the picture How are you feeling? Why? What is your state of mind? Where have you been? What happened? What can you hear? How does that make you feel?

Plenary Self Assessment: Selected pupils read pieces of empathy writing. How have they effectively showed empathy? Empathy is the ability to identify with a place or person. Identify three places where you have done this well and write a supporting comment.
