LHC Access System August 2006 LHC Access System – Status and Planning August 2006 Elena Manola-Poggioli Eva Sanchez-Corral TS-CSE on behalf of the LHC Access Project Team

LHC Access System August 2006 LHC Access System LHC Access Control System – LACS –Supports the physical equipment regulating the access to the accelerator –Allows operation of access equipment LHC Access Safety System – LASS –Provides interlock between EIS-faisceau and EIS-acces –Ensures the collective protection of personnel from the radiation hazards

LHC Access System August 2006 LHC Access Control 34 Access Points 95 controlled sector doors 65 interlocked end-of-zone doors 26 interlocked ‘portes crionolines + ventilation’ 17 interlocked movable shielding walls 200 junction boxes 170 racks 110 surveillance cameras 200 controllers (PLCs, PCs) Control system from CCC and experiments Supervision system

LHC Access System August 2006 LHC0: design validation

LHC Access System August 2006 Installation Status: sector doors and junction boxes Sector doors: –Point 8: 90% –Point 7: 90% –Point 1: 75% Junction Boxes: –Point 8: 100% –Point 7: 100% –Point 1: 100% –Point 6: 90%

LHC Access System August 2006

LHC Access System August 2006 Access points - Underground Installation of the access points in UX85, UJ83 and UJ87 in progress Complete test of the access point UX85, including the IHM and control from the CCC, supervision and maintenance procedures -> mid September Circulation of personnel not affected

LHC Access System August 2006 Installation Strategy – Underground Access Points Not used for personnel passage before the definite closure of the area (installation of the grids) Configured for biometric recognition and RFID badge identification

LHC Access System August 2006

LHC Access System August 2006 Access for the Pits Head Prerequisites: –Access points UX85, UJ83 and UJ87 integrated and validated –Access Help Desk manned and operational –User information: Posters, group secretariats, TCC, bulletin Constraints: minimize the impact on the personnel flow during the LHC installation period Strategy: –Biometric recognition disabled –Use of the new CERN site access cards (equipped with MIFARE RFID chips) for the personal identification – Under validation Current CERN site ACCESS magnetic cards is being progressively replaced by the new RF cards (TS/CSE responsibility) –Dosimeters not required during the LHC installation –Before LHC start-up, users shall be requested to get a dosimeter equipped with the RFID chips

LHC Access System August 2006 New CERN Site Access Cards:

LHC Access System August 2006 Persons working on the Points 7 and 8 will be asked to retrieve the new access cards at the Building 55 already in September Access to the LHC interlocked areas in the LHC operation phase: personnel dosimeter equipped with the RFID chip and biometric identification

LHC Access System August 2006 Short term objectives Points 7 and 8: –PM85: Dismantling of the existing system: beginning October (1 week) Installation and integration of the new system (1 week) Presence of the security guardian required during dismantling and installation Operational mid October –PM76 operational end October –PZ85 operational beginning November

LHC Access System August 2006 Global Planning Installation and Commissioning detail planning –Integrated within the LHC IC General plan (TS/IC) EDMS –Machine and Experiments Deployment: –P8, P7, P4 -> 2006 –P1: January 2007 –P5: February 2007 –P3: March 2007 –P6: April 2007 –P2: May 2006 –Final installation (inter-site doors, biometric identification, dosimeters with RFIDs, grids) June 2007 Tests: Site functional tests per site at the end of the site installation; in coordination with machine groups concerned Global and Final tests –at the end of the installation during summer 2007 –special requirements (coordination with different groups concerned, access restricted to personnel involved in tests) Follow-up with MTF

LHC Access System August 2006 Tests Tests strategy defined all along the I&C phases till transfer to Operation and Maintenance –EMDS –HW, SW Functional and Safety (INB requirements !) Tests Phases: Local acceptance Integration Functional Site Functional Inter-site Global Tests and Final Tests AB/DSO INB Tests Roles and Responsibilities being defined with different groups concerned –project team, contractors, HC, equipment groups, experiments, AB

LHC Access System August 2006 LASS General Status Safety software under development Functional software (Man machine interfaces..) under development Electrical design: power supplies, rack installation drawings, LASS command interface (Pupitre), cable loop – delays, but progressing well recently Goal: follow-up with the installation the pace of the LACS installation in order to synchronize the testing

LHC Access System August 2006 Conclusions Objectives: –LASS and LACS operational in LHC7, LHC8, CCC by mid November 2006 All pieces of the ‘LEGO’ are there or under production Planning relies on: –No major technical issues during integration –Contractors and subcontractors respect the deadlines
