Introduction What will we be learning? Working with children ages years Working alone and in a team Collaborating with parents - yes, parents. Complying with strategies and procedures of the school Using AND applying: reference tools observation tools accident reports notes to parents, etc.

7 Elements of this Competency We will learn to do the following for preschool & school-age children: 1. Identify developmental parameters (we will go into detail) 2. Identify cultural differences that have an impact on working with children 3. Implementing a framework of rules to reinforce appropriate behaviours 4. How to apply various facilitation techniques 5. How to apply various intervention techniques with a child or group of children 6. How to effectively observe a child/group of children 7. Communicate information to parents and various stakeholders

Social Development Is a child able to maintain flexible and harmonious relationships with others in various contexts? All children at different ages have different levels of: Social Skills (super important!) Social Values Knowledge It is up to US to stimulate an environment that enables children to trust others (peers & educators) and develop social skills, social values, and knowledge.

Social Development... What are values? How we guide ourselves in our daily life What we feel is socially desirable

Social Development... During social development, when many children are socialized together, children naturally get frustrated: They get anxious Physical: punching, kicking, biting, etc. Verbal: yelling, tantrums, etc. We need to teach: Respect Where/who they can go to for support: Ex: A special place in the classroom, a walk in the hallway, etc. Promote acceptance of others How to manage stress/conflicts/large groups

Emotional Development Children need to feel secure/safe wherever they are FIRST Make your classroom a safe environment Without a safe environment, everything else is lost Trust Relationships Self-esteem Success does not exist without safety Once safety is established, build a trusting relationship with your students! Be interested in your students!!!

Emotional Development Trusting relationship leads to: Children explore the environment Freedom to say what they want/need to Allows the teacher to always be aware of what is going on with their students

Emotional Development Enables you to help children identify their emotions: “It looks like you are proud of yourself” “I think that you are angry” Show them how to express things they are unsure of
