Endangered Species in Florida 1st Grade Science Lesson

In this lesson we will: Be investigators on a mission to help endangered animals. Learn about different endangered animals in Florida. Visit a zoo and use online resources to do research. Create a plan to help these endangered animals. Make a video for the school morning show, explaining what we learned and how we can help these animals. Introduction

Endangered Species Describe the Problem Why are they endangered? Analyze the Problem How can we help? Identify Possible Solutions Promote Awareness Create an Action Plan Steps to success

Animals PlantsHumans What do we have in common?

Describe the Problem: Do you know what an endangered animal is? What kind of endangered species do you think we have in Florida? Q:Which of these animals do you think is endangered? -Sea turtle, Florida Panther, Manatee, Alligator What are endangered species?

Analyze the Problem: What basic needs are necessary for all animals, plants, and humans to live? What happens if they don’t get those? What other reasons do you think would make an animal become endangered or extinct? Why are they Endangered?

Identify Possible Solutions: How could we help these endangered animals? Talking to others? Protecting their habitats? Using Sea Turtle “friendly” lights? Try to come up with three ideas of your own. How can we help?

Create an Action Plan: We will be making a group video that will include: Florida’s endangered animals Why they are endangered How we can all help This video will play on the school morning show. We will be helping the endangered animals by promoting awareness! Promote Awareness

Research: In order to make our final video, you will need to research specific endangered animals. Here are some helpful sites to get you started: Kids Planet E-Patrol Endangered Animals We will also be going to the zoo to gather more information on these animals. Investigating

By the end of this lesson: You will be able to identify and understand what endangered animals are. Be able to explain why they are endangered in Florida. Come up with a solution on how to help these animals. Create a group video to present on the school morning show to promote awareness. Summary
