The Decade Project The 1990’s

Photoshop (1990) Photoshop was created by Thomas Knoll and John Knoll. This invention’s purpose was to edit photos. Photoshops has several tools that photographer can use to enhance their photos. Photoshop had such an impact on the photographer’s photos. The changes that photoshop makes, can make the audience be confused about what is real and what is not.

The World Wide Web (1990) The world wide web was created by Tim Berners-Lee, with the ideas of Vannevar Bush. Vannevar Bush first proposed the hyperlink in The hyperlink is a link from hypertext that leads to another location or file. This idea led to the World Wide Web, HTML (HyperText Markup Language), HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol), and URLs (Universal Resource Locators) to be created in This invention was and still is important because this allowed for information to be easily delivered anywhere. The world wide web also makes browsing and accessing the internet much easier.

The “Smart” pill (1992) The Smart pill was created by Jerome Schentag and David D’Andrea, and later was patented by the two inventors in The purpose of the pill was after ingestion, to stimulate certain regions of the brain such as the temporal and frontal lobe, to improve intelligence, memory formation, and concentration. In the Smart pill you were consuming the device. This invention was important because this was the first step in minimizing complex electronic systems, to the size of 1 inch.

The Pentium Processor (1993) The world was already head over heels in love with the World Wide Web and its magical abilities, but computers were not smart enough and fast enough to reciprocate the same feeling. Intel, which is now well-known as a technology giant of the world, entered the fray on March 22, 1993 when it launched its exclusive Pentium brand of microprocessors. The journey started with Pentium Classic and today it has landed into a completely new era, where Pentium is replaced by Intel Core Processors. However, the Pentium contribution to technological development enabled the types of computer applications that we take for granted these days. The Intel Museum in Santa Clara, California proudly showcases the Pentium as one of its greatest achievements.

Playstation (1994) The developers of the Playstation wanted a design that was both simple and user-friendly. The developers decided on using basic shapes in order to create a design that has high performance and looked aesthetically pleasing. The Playstation model is both slim and compact. The controller of the Playstation was designed that it feels comfortable in anyone’s hands. Also the buttons were round because it makes them easier to press. This invention was important because this was the first on the Playstation consoles.

MP3 (1999) The first portable MP3 first appeared in This invention was important because this allowed for mass storage of music. This invention was created by Karlheinz Brandenburg, and Dieter Seitzer. MP3 stands for MPEG Audio Layer III. This compresses music without losing any of the sound quality. How this works is the original sound data is shrunken down in order to allow for more storage, while not changing the sound quality.

Java Prior to the invention of Java programming language, C and C++ were the only popular languages used by coders and software developers. Java made it easy for programmers to code because it was class-based, concurrent and an object-oriented language that had very few implementation dependencies compared to existing languages. For client-server web applications, Java was a tailor-made fit. The major features of Java were its portability, dynamic scope, and secure design.

Google Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in At this time Google became an important company because this was the first of search engines to change. Before Google, search engines would rank searches based on how many times a term was used. This was an inefficient way of searching because the search results could be easily manipulated and have unhelpful results. However, with Google there would be one site with multiple links on it. The results would be in order of most useful and relevant, to those that have less importance.
