Health Education 6 If only puberty could be skipped…..

Health Education 6 CO-ED Learning Objectives: Demonstrate an understanding of the stages of adolescent growth and development. Have a clear understanding of what to expect when going through puberty, (Emotional, physical, social). Accurately describe the structures of the male and female reproductive system. Demonstrate and understanding of the importance of respecting own and others developmental rates during puberty. Identify the importance of personal hygiene practices.

Health Education 6 Learning outcomes – Girls only session Demonstrate an understanding of female specific growth and development during puberty including breast development, weight gain and menstruation. Identify the importance of personal hygiene products, focus being on skin care and feminine products. Learning outcomes – Boys only session Demonstrate an understanding of male specific growth and development during puberty including body hair, muscle growth, semen production, erections and nocturnal emissions. Identify the importance of personal hygiene products, focus being on skin care and means to control body odour.

Health Education 6 Format Students will complete two, one hour lessons with Ms. McElhinney as their instructor. The first lesson will cover all CO-ED learning outcomes. Each grade 6 class will have their own co-ed lesson. The second lesson will be segregated and cover gender specific learning outcomes. Divisions will be split into four separate gender specific groups.

Resources The following resources will be used to supplement learning; 1.Always Changing Program – sponsored by Physical and Health Education Canada, PHEA and Always ®. 2.Students will all receive an Always Changing student guide. 3.Students will receive worksheets including the female and male reproductive system. 4.Students will complete a pre-test and post-test on puberty 5.Students will watch a gender specific video clip as part of the Always Changing program. 6.Girls will be given a sample kit of feminine hygiene products.
