Welcome Parents! 2013 Grade 1 Music Class Parent’s Day

My name is Eric Gulotty. Graduated from New York University with a degree in Theatre Worked for over 20 years in theatre, television, movies, and special events. Came to Taiwan 5 years ago with my wife and two children This is my 4 th year at Guangren

What are the class goals? Maximize opportunities for students to speak English with each other Students will become phonemically aware in a relaxed setting Students will find speaking, reading, and writing English to be a positive experience Students will regularly practice using sentences with some of the common grammar transfer difficulties

Grade 1 Conversation Fall Semester 2013

Starfall Learn to Read Series Starfall books Focus on one phonemic element have interactive video and audio support Introduce new words in a fun way Reading and Writing Journal reinforces the books reinforces phonemic awareness Intergrates all four skills

How will I teach the class?  Warm up period where students share with each other to get used to speaking English (5 minutes)  Topic is introduced and discussed (5 minutes)  Specific material is presented (5 minutes)  Games and activities to practice (15 minutes)  Students use the language on their own(10 minutes)

Grade 1 Phonics Fall Semester 2013

Practice makes Perfect Students can not get enough writing and phonemic awareness practice The goal is improvement( 改善 ) and consistency( 一致 性 ), not perfection( 完美 ). Remember, we must keep English a positive experience Students are learning how to listen and use English in an academic setting

What can parents do to help? Make English a positive experience Encourage your child to talk about the books and conversations they study in school Be supportive when your child is trying to speak English with you
