Waitati Energy Project a subjective analysis

First sparks…

Early Aims 1.Examine 'Demand Side' energy (consumption) in Waitati 2.Explore 'Supply Side' energy (production) in Waitati 3.Document the process

2007 Goals Reduction of energy use Increasing energy efficiency Making our homes healthy places Reduction of community carbon footprint Appraisal of local energy reticulation Assessment of production potential Developing new renewable distributed energy production Building a more resilient community Establishing relationships with the Energy Industry and OU researchers Providing a model for change, providing a model for policy in action

Partnerships!

A year on… Oct ‘08 Culmination of HERS Town in Transition Energy Forum Charitable Trust SNOWBALLING!

What is the WEP? And the OERC…

Objectives ‘08 -’09 1.To develop and administer projects that provide education, support and resources to maximise locally based sustainable provision of energy, food, and water. 2.To develop and administer projects that provide education, support and resources to minimise energy use, encourage healthy homes and encourage sustainable households. 3.To secure and manage funding to achieve the stated goals of the WEP, and to stimulate local sustainable economic activity. 4.To develop and maintain relationships to achieve the stated goals of the WEP. 5.To ensure community partnership in any enterprises initiated by the WEP and to aim for the most equitable use of resources. 6.To foster linkages between organisations with objectives similar to, or complementary to, the WEP’s own Vision and Objectives. 7.The WEP’s goals and activity will always remain charitable.

The next stage

2009 WEP: looking at demand, pushing generation (sliding scale) What would motivate people to make changes? How feasible is local energy generation? What would we need to make it happen? (external expertise and resources)
