I- Introduction ► The Android OS -> Operating systems for mobiles ► Produced by Open Handset Alliance and led by Google
II- History ► The Android OS -> developed by Android Inc ► Bought by Google in 2005 ► Google and other members of the Open Handset Alliance collaborated on Android's development and release.
► Android is based upon a modified version of the Linux Kernel ► In the fourth Quarter of 2010 the Android O.S. -> the world's best-selling Smart phone platform, dethroning Nokia's Symbian.
III- Features ► Android OS Has many features that makes it really one of the Operating Systems for mobile phones. Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth ….etc Supports SMS and MMS Android OS supports most common audio/video formats
Android Market: a catalog of applications that can be downloaded and installed to Android devices over-the-air, without the use of a PC. Multitasking, using , Video calling, multi- touch(usually used for gaming), web browsing, … etc.
IV- Competitors ► Android O.S -> popular but has a strong competition with other mobile O.S. ► Main competitors: iPhone Operating System (Apple): Symbian (Nokia):
► iPhone Operating System (Apple): the biggest competitor for the Android -> easy use the O.S the App store -> competitor of the Android Market. These two reasons made the iOS a really big competitor against the Android OS. ► Symbian (Nokia): Another big competitor for the Android Compatibility with almost any mobile phone device.
V- Future Development & References ► New version of android -> “ Honeycomb ” designed for tablet computers ► Compete with Apple ’ s IPad.
