How the oceans were formed Volcanoes erupted and released gases. The gases cooled and formed into clouds. Then all of the clouds precipitated and formed a big ocean. The way the five oceans were formed was because in continental drift the land divides the oceans to the Pacific, Atlantic, Southern, Indian, and Arctic.
