SOME CRITICAL ISSUES OF THE INDIAN COAL MINING INDUSTRY PREPARED BY : KALYANI JHA

INDIAN MINERAL RESOURCES  India has ample amount of mineral resources.  Indian has gained high momentum of production on various mineral resources.  Among such mineral coal stand on the first position.

FIRST CRITICAL ISSUE SPONTANEOUS HEATING

SPONTANEOUS HEATING  Spontaneous heating is the process of heating of coal after some period.  The period after which spontaneous heating takes place is called incubation period.

CONT…  Heating of the coal takes place after exposure of coal to the atmosphere.  This heating of coal takes face of dangerous fire.  The problem of fire is an old as an history of mine.  Best example: JHARIA COAL FIELD.

CAUSES OF MINE FIRE  In O/C mine  Spontaneous heating  In U/G mine  Sluggish ventilation  Improper roof support in underground mine  Incomplete extraction

SECOND CRITICAL ISSUE VENTILATION PROBLEM  In underground mine ventilation is the big problem.  The sluggish ventilation causes various problem to the workers at working phase  Various gases comes out during extraction process. Such as CO, CH4 etc

CONT…  The main gas which is dangerous for workers is methane.  The high quantity of methane in mine cause fire damp explosion.  Insufficient ventilation causes coal dust explosion.

VARIOUS OTHER ISSUES  Since the workers of the mine are unskilled and not properly trained.  This unskilleness and improper training may cause various accidents in the mine and various economical loss.

PREVENTION TO BE TAKEN  Proper care should be taken so that spontaneous heating should not take place, such as: 1) Coal piece should be covered with plastic cloth. 2) If heating of coal is seen then water should be sprinkled immediately on coal. 3) New mining method for complete extraction of coal.

PREVENTION FOR VENTILATION PROBLEM  Proper ventilation arrangement should be made.  Ventilation arrangement should be made such that fresh air should reach at working face.  Ventilation should be such that cool atmosphere must be maintained under mine.

O THER PREVENTION  Worker of the mine should be well trained before giving entry in the mine.  They should be given various information about the machine which they are going to operate.

THANK YOU
