Background to Current Protests…  Current conflicts: -Roots began with collapse of Ottoman Empire around WWI ( ). -British and French wanted control of the region for their colonies.

British Empire (Light Red)  Vital link with India for trade went through the Middle East

Protect the Oil!  During WWI, British Navy switches from coal to oil- burning ships…where’s the oil again?

Post WWI Independence  Britain granted independence to a number of her colonies in the 1920’s and 1930’s.  But, with a great demand for oil, how could Britain make sure these new countries listened?

British answer?  Set-up governments who have: 1) Leaders willing to sell oil. 2) Leaders who are in complete control of their people (authoritarian rule).

Results of British colonialism 1)Strong, militaristic leaders. 2)Large populations of people with little resources. 3)Religious/ ethnically divided countries.
