What is a digital story? A 3-5 minute video produced by someone who is not a media professional, typically constructed as a thought piece on a personal experience that is important to the author. ZDBE

Student Examples – Reflection What are your overall impressions of what you have just seen? How do you think the digital story could be used in education? How would you assess what you just saw?

7 elements of an Effective Digital Story 1.Point (of view) –Does your story have a central point or transformative realization? –Why this story, now, with this group of people? –Is your story told in a first-person point of view? 2.Dramatic question –“Simply making a point doesn’t necessarily keep the audience’s attention throughout a story. Well-crafted stories … set up a tension from the beginning that holds you until the end.” –Desire-action-realization model: Establish a central desire in the beginning of the story in a way that the satisfaction or denial of that desire resolves the story and the forces that get in the way create tension

7 elements of an Effective Digital Story (cont.) 3.Emotional content –Is there a chance you won’t get what you desire? How do you get past the hard parts? 4.The Gift of Your Voice –Did you merely read the script or were you able to recite it from memory and make it sound more conversational? 5.Power of the Soundtrack 6.Economy 7.Pacing
