ISA&D29-Oct-13 Systems Analyst: problem solver IT and Strategic Planning

ISA&D29-Oct-13  Information Systems are crucial to modern business organizations  The key to successful system development is systems analysis and design Systems Analysis (SA): is the process of understanding and specifying in detail what the information system should do.

ISA&D29-Oct-13

ISA&D29-Oct-13 Systems Design (SD): is the process of specifying in detail how the many components of the information system should be physically implemented. Systems Analyst (SA): is a business professional who uses analysis and design techniques to solve business problems using information technology and who develops IS.

ISA&D29-Oct-13 Systems analyst is a problem solver rather than a technical programmer A great variety of special skills is required: Technical Knowledge and Skills Business Knowledge and Skills People Knowledge and Skills Integrity and Ethics

ISA&D29-Oct-13

ISA&D29-Oct Verify benefits of solving problem outweigh the costs 1- Research and understand the problem 3- Define the requirements for solving the problem 4- Develop a set of possible solutions (alternatives) 6- Define the details of the chosen solution 8- Monitor to ensure desired results 5- Decide which solution is best and recommend 7- Implement the solution

ISA&D29-Oct-13 An analyst should have fundamental technology knowledge of:  Computers / peripheral devices (hardware)  Files and database systems  Input and output components and alternatives  Computer networks and protocols  Programming languages, operating systems, and utilities  Communication and collaboration technology  Dropbox, GoogleDrive,

ISA&D29-Oct-13  Software productivity packages  Integrated development environments (IDEs) for programming languages  Visual modelling tools and code generation tools  Analyst understands SDLC techniques  Project planning, cost/benefit, interviewing  Systems requirements modelling including Design, database design, and network configuration

ISA&D29-Oct-13 Analyst must understand Business functions performed by organization Strategies, plans, traditions, and values of the organization Organizational structure Organization management techniques Functional work processes

ISA&D29-Oct-13 Systems analyst must be an effective communicator Systems analyst must be able to perform various roles such as negotiator, teacher, mentor, collaborator, and manager

ISA&D29-Oct-13 Types of Technology Encountered  Any change is opposite by traditional users  Desktop systems  Networked desktop systems that share data  Client-server systems  Large-scale centralized mainframe systems  Systems using Internet, intranet, and extranet technology

ISA&D29-Oct-13 Programmer Analyst Business Systems Analyst End-user Analyst Business Consultant Systems Consultant System Support Analyst System Designer Software Engineer System Architect

ISA&D29-Oct-13 Special projects affecting executives Designing an executive information system Business process management, redesign and improvements of existing processes systems strategic planning is one of the key components of a strategic plan Application architecture plan (business focus) Technology architecture plan (infrastructure focus)
