born August 10, 1874, in West Branch, Iowa, U.S.— died October 20, 1964, in New York, New York and was the 31st president of the United States (1929–33). Died at the age of 90 and had 2 sons.

In 1928, Hoover was nominated as the Republican candidate for president on the first ballot with Charles Curtis as his running mate. He approved "The Star-Spangled Banner" as the National Anthem. He was the President when the Great Depression took place. He was the first President that was a millionaire. President Hoover was one of two Presidents who did not accept a salary for being President. He donated his salary to charity.

In 1914, Hoover put other men in charge of his mining business and gave all his time to Belgian relief during World War I. After the crash, Herbert Hoover ordered federal departments to speed up construction projects, cut $160 million in taxes, and doubled the amount spent on public works. When the Hoovers wanted to speak privately while in the presence of White House guests, they spoke Chinese. In 1946 Hoover traveled to 38 countries, documented food needs, located surpluses, and arranged food shipments to countries in need. Only six of the 48 states voted for Hoover, and he was defeated by Roosevelt.
