Getting to Grips with Assignments Bronze Level – Compulsory

Contents Setting up assignments Assignment settings Gradebook Setting up Grade scales Backing up assignments Grading and giving feedback Examples/Benefits

Overview The assignment activity module enables a teacher to communicate tasks, collect work and provide grades and feedback. Students can submit any digital content (files), such as word- processed documents, spreadsheets, images, or audio and video clips. Alternatively, or in addition, the assignment may require students to type text directly into the text editor.

Overview When reviewing assignments, teachers can leave feedback comments and upload files, such as marked-up student submissions, documents with comments or spoken audio feedback. Assignments can be graded using a numerical or custom.

College Target Student feedback – would like to be able to upload assignments online Target in the Development Plan of 80% of assignments to be uploaded via Moodle

Setting up Assignments 3. Select the Assignment activity 1. Turn the editing on 2. Add an activity or resource 4. Click Add

Assignment Settings 5. Give the assignment a name 6. Give the assignment a description. This may give details of what the assignment needs to include and grading criteria, requirements about file types, naming conventions

9. Set the dates 10. Set if you would like students to declare it is their own work

“Online text”. This does not require students to upload a file instead student type (or cut and paste ) text into the Moodle editor Set maximum size. This is important when dealing with larger file sizes such as images, audio or video Set the maximum number of files which students can upload If enabled students can leave comments on their submission

If enabled you can leave feedback comments for each submission If enabled you can upload a response file. This could be the assignments with annotated comments Customise grade scales in the settings to reflect the mark scheme for the assignment

The students will tick a box to acknowledge it is their own work Students will add their assignment file(s) and save Student View

Gradebook All the grades for each student can be found in the gradebook

Setting up Grade Scales Click on grades under settings

Click on the scales tab Add a new scale. You can now set the grade scale in the assignment settings

Backing up Assignments It is important to back up all assignments to your own work area as you may want to refer back to past assignments. Click “Download all submissions” and save the zipped folder. At the end of the year assignments will be deleted from Moodle and cannot be recovered so download assignments to your own work area

Grading and Giving Feedback Add a grade or comment only Add a grade and comment Upload standard feedback sheet (in Word) as a Response file Download the submitted work, annotate it with feedback and then re- upload as a Response file Customise grade scales in the settings to reflect the mark scheme for the assignment Notification s to students once the assignments have been graded

View/grade all submissions Assignment Summary

Quick Grading Select “quick grading” for grading directly into the submissions table.

grade Comment Feedback files Grading and Leaving Comments Click the grade icon

Select Users Lock submissions – prevent submission changes Revert the submission to draft – allow a new submission Unlock submissions – allow submission changes Grant extension – extend deadline to individual students Send Feedback files – response file, annotated copy of assignments

Offline grading Worksheet Download the grading worksheet which will open in Excel

Offline grading Worksheet Add a grade and a comment for each participant. Once you have added them in as below, you can go thought the upload process.

Upload grading worksheet

Once you have uploaded the file you are prompted to confirm the changes below. After you confirm, the assignment and gradebook are updated

Benefits Students can easily submit coursework from anywhere including home! Save teachers time collecting paper copies – students can now also declare it is their own work online using the new declaration feature Keeps a back up of assignments so coursework doesn’t go missing

Benefits What’s the advantage of the Moodle assignment upload to students ing the assignment? All assignments are together in one place Assignments don’t go astray and lost in your box Record keeping is easier – student feedback and grades are together in once place Timesaver – can copy/paste some of the same comments to students in their feedback
