Mel Williams WRITING FOR PUBLICATION

‘Rip It Up’ = Weekly music magazine I am familiar with the articles they write Journalism is an interest of mine I hoped to recreate a ‘Rip It Up’ feature write-up. PURPOSE/INTENTION

A current issue A new discovery An event Feature Article – The Advertiser Movies Gigs Albums Reviews – The Advertiser/J- mag/Review Weekly OTHER OPTIONS THAT WERE CONSIDERED

PROCESS – ANALYSING WRITE-UPS

The name of the band or artist that the write-up is about. Title A witty pun/play on words linked with the name of an album or song by the musician that the article is written on. Subtitle The interviewer’s name Author A ‘Question-Response’ pattern. The interviewer will ask a question to trigger a small story or answer from the musician. Body A recent band photo or album cover for the musician. Picture PROCESS – DECONSTRUCTING THE TEXT

More of an interview than an articleToo much direct dialogue from the person being interviewedNot enough chance to demonstrate my writing ability PROCESS – ISSUE! ‘Hinds told the website that progress has been “slow,” given its members, Ben Weinman from Dillinger Escape Plan, former Mars Volta drummer Thomas Pridgen and former Janes Addiction bassist Eric Avery all live in different parts of the world. “We tried to get together and do an album, but there’s been no time. We want to record crazy stuff and Ben (Weinman) is working on that, but it’s been hard to get together,” Hinds said. And as for the choice of name? “Because they look sick,” the guitarist said.’ Solution: Write AS a member of the band being interviewed as well as the interviewer.

Young (15-30) Both genders Sense of humour Often fans of “indie” music Audience – Music fans who prefer “non- mainstream” music. Sophistication can be added to the reproduction when talking about musicality of the album. Language is casual To inform readers of recent album releases and the journey that was taken to get the musicians where they are. To answer questions that people may not already know the answer to. To Advertise new bands with a small fan-base. Purpose PROCESS – DECONSTRUCTING THE TEXT

Medusas Band name With the metaphorical theme linked with board games – “Snakes and Ladders” Band album Don’t Pass Go - Monopoly Right Hand Blue - Twister Three Guesses Who – Guess Who Some songs Climbing the Ladders – Tying in their board game theme and also linking it to the music charts and their rank Subtitle/Pun PROCESS - REPRODUCTION

First draft of part of the Write – up. So was is hard to do the album in that short amount of time. “It was quite hard! We rushed the songs to get them done and none of us really enjoyed the music. It seemed like a boring office job which is what we didn’t want. We didn’t think the songs sounded like hits so we recorded them in the same place as the other ones for some consistency. The album sounded more mellow than we had intended but at least all of the songs matched. DEVELOPMENT EVIDENCE

Second draft of part of the write – up. (after consulting with editorial group) So was is hard to do the album in two half day sessions? “It was ridiculously difficult! We rushed the songs to get them done and none of us really enjoyed the music because seemed like the music was a boring office job which is what we wanted to escape from. Our unhappiness with the tracks came across so we decided to re-record the tracks in the same place as the rest of them. The album has a more folk/acoustic sound now which is the aim we were going for.” DEVELOPMENT EVIDENCE

Third draft of write – up after consulting with teacher. Wow, three songs in less than twelve hours, that doesn’t seem easy. “It was mind-bogglingly difficult! We rushed the songs to get them done and I think that was one of the times where being in a band felt like a job which we wanted to escape, rather than something we love doing. After listening to the tracks a few times, we heard that negativity come across so we decided to re-record them in Ricky’s shed along with the rest of the songs. The album has a more folk/acoustic sound now which is the aim we were going for.” DEVELOPMENT EVIDENCE

Final version of part of the write – up after re-reading my own work. Wow, three songs in less than twelve hours, was that difficult to manage? “It was mind-bogglingly difficult! We rushed the songs to get them done and I think that was one of the times where being in a band felt like a job rather than something we love doing. That slightly negative feeling came across in those three tracks so we decided to re-record them in Ricky’s shed along with the rest of the songs. The album has a more consistent folk-influenced acoustic sound now which is the aim we were going for.” DEVELOPMENT EVIDENCE
