F. Borgnolutti January 17 th 2013 Proposal for a winding test procedure for qualifying the QXF cable

Status of the winding tests at LBNL Status of the winding test at LBL: QXF cable: All the QXF prototype cables with a core had popped strand when wound in the unfavorable winding direction. The pole piece is not optimized, we will soon get the pole piece designed by FNAL 3D printed. Experience with HQ cable: In HQ coils made with cored cable we always have pop strands in the first turn of L2 (unfavorable winding direction).  We always managed to prevent the strand from popping out by using the small tool designed by LBL technicians. In the favorable winding direction (L1), usually easy popped strands in the 1 st turn. Evidence of cable handling impact on the cable mechanical stability (cable tested before and after being insulated) 21/17/2013

Assessment of the cable mechanical stability Reference pole piece design (MQXF3_V0) LBNL CERN FNAL # pole piece length between labs (0.4 m at Cern) Cable evaluation test: -Winding direction -Winding tension -Evaluation of the cable -FNAL mech. stability test Anti-clockwise HQ first turn = 20 lb  Scale up for the QXF gives 27 lb Comparison of the results between the labs How to capture all these information? Rapid prototyping Same pole piece design (Std. pole piece, not necessary the final one):  MQXF3_V0 designed with bend (FNAL)  MQXF3_V0 designed with roxie (Cern)  So far LBNL has been using a scale up of HQ (FNAL design is being fabricated, we will re-test the cables with this one) Parts are similar Uses LBNL score sheet as starting point Qualification of the cable 31/17/2013 cable Quantify the mechanical stability of the cable Other parameters: Sieze of the facets, strand deformation, …. Roping tension measurement Uses LBNL score sheet as starting point
