CME Christian Methodist Episcopal

Christian Methodist Episcopal - CME In 1844 the Methodist Church was split on the issue of slavery with the Northern states against slavery and the Southern states for it. The blacks wanted autonomy and the whites wanted blacks to leave. As a result the Methodist Episcopal Church South in 1866 at their General Conference honored the petitions of the blacks to withdraw.

CME move In 1870 the third African American Methodist denomination was founded. It was call “Colored Methodist Episcopal Church in America.”

It was founded by bishops William H. Miles and Richard H. Vanderhorst. In 1954 they changed their name from “Colored” to “Christian.”

One of the early bishops of the CME church Lucius Holsey worked hard for the CME church. He worked hard to mend the racial divide.
