WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT 8 TH GRADE? In preparation for high school, we expect our Eighth Graders to:  Take ownership and responsibility for academics  Initiate conversation with teachers regarding grades  Accept responsibility for behavior  Move from “problem-identification” to “problem- solving”  Learn and grow!

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF READING CLASS? To significantly improve proficiency in reading comprehension and fluency for all students through analysis of various texts through close reading strategies and other reading practice resources.

We will focus on the following areas throughout the course of the school year:  Literary Text & components  Nonfiction and Informational Text & components  Fluency in reading  Vocabulary Acquisition Visit for new standardswww.cobbk12.org/commoncore

GRADING POLICY  Class work30%  Preparation, Participation, and Practice 15%  Quizzes/Journals25%  Tests/Projects30%

WHAT IS A ONLINE READER RESPONSE?  Students respond to an essential question for the current unit [usually in a 20 minute time frame].  Each response is connected to our academic vocabulary and is the student’s personal reaction to what they are learning. Online Reader Responses offer readers the experiences they need to read, analyze, reflect, and construct meaning of what they are learning in class. They are able to share their responses in an innovative way that is engaging and teaches them about the proper use of technology.
