Z z z z z z z z… GOT SLEEP?

Interesting Sleep Facts Horses, cows, and snakes don’t close their eyes when they sleep An overworked shipmate falling asleep at the wheel caused the oil spill disaster of the Exxon Valdex in Some seals and dolphins sleep with one- half of their brain while the other half is alert for danger.

Why Do I Need Sleep? Lack Of Sleep May Cause… Increased irritability Decreased motivation, memory and concentration Decreased creativity and spontaneity Increased proneness to injury Great likelihood of problems such as stomach upset or headaches

What is REM Sleep anyway? REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement 25% of each sleep cycle (which is typically 90-minutes) REM is the stage of most intense dreaming While in REM your large muscles can’t move, but your pulse, breathing, and temperature go up

Substances that Disrupt Sleep: Caffeine – don’t have coffee, tea, chocolate or soft drinks with caffeine after mid- afternoon Alcohol – suppresses REM sleep and may make you wakeful later in the night Nicotine – people who smoke take longer to fall asleep, wake more often and have less REM and deep non-REM sleep Diet Pills – often contain ingredients that disrupt sleep

More Interesting Sleep Facts Humans will die from lack of sleep sooner than from lack of food The immune system is most active during sleep All mammals sleep. Grazing animals sleep only 3 hours a day, while bats sleep 20 Studies suggest Americans may get 2½ to 3 hours less sleep per day than our bodies were designed to have
