Innovation (Netflix)  Open competition for the best collaborative filtering algorithm  Open to anyone not connected with Netflix  BellKor’s Pragmatic Chaos team won $1,000,000 for beating Netflix’s own algorithm  They increased predicting ratings by 10%

Innovation (Netflix)  Not an easy process  Competition began in 2006  Netflix awarded a $50,000 progress prize each year for improving the algorithm, but not reaching the grand prize level  If no one had reached the grand prize by 2011, the competition would have been terminated  But in 2009 BellKor’s Pragmatic Chaos team beat the algorithm and won the grand prize

Innovation Competition  This is a process of business development.  It is a form of social engineering  It focuses on the creation and elaboration of the best and sustainable ideas  Based in idea that profitable innovation comes not from increasing investments in R&D, but from systematically identifying more exceptional opportunities

Competition Design Principles  The design principles of the innovation competition:  Encourage users to participate in an open innovation process  Inspire their creativity  Increase the quality of the submissions  Add constraints to the process  Generate innovations  Allow for radical ideas

Purpose of Competitions  When the competition is over, you have new resources and have found talent  This is cheaper, faster, and more efficient  The cost of the competition is much less than R&D cost  That low cost gets you PR, new resources, and access to new talent  Even runner-ups can be good talent
