The Rich Man And Lazarus Luke 16:19-31

Do Not Trust Riches  Rich and poor die the same (Heb. 9:27) –Death is no respecter of persons  Questions about wicked prospering are age-old (16:19-23) –Bible study past Wednesday (Psa. 73:3) –What about disciples? (Matt. 19:23-25)

 True prosperity is spiritual, not material –Rich man here prospers, but ends in torment (Lk. 16:25) –Lazarus, poor man, finds comfort (Lk. 16:25) This was not based on material success The primary purpose of God’s word is spirituality Where they ended tells you it is about the latter, not the former

Salvation  It is not universal (Lk. 16:22-25) –One was saved (comforted); one was lost (torment) –Some make good choices; some make bad choices (Matt. 7:13-14)

Death Does Not End One’s Existence  Rich man knew where he was, where Lazarus was and who Lazarus was. Consciousness (Lk. 16:23-24)  “Only live once” is false (Job. 14:14; Jn. 5:28- 29)  Jesus died and lived again (Rom. 14:9)  Same for us (1 Cor. 6:14)  No second chance (Lk. 16:26)  No “third place” (2 Peter 2:9)

Truth Is Enough  Moses was enough at one time (Lk. 16:27-31)  The rich man’s brothers may have been dazzled and/or frightened, but saved?  Jesus had raised the widow’s son (Lk. 7) and Jairus’ daughter (Lk. 8) Did all Israel believe?  Samuel once appeared to Saul and nothing changed (1 Sam. 28)  Another returned from the dead and commanded the gospel to be preached for salvation (Mk. 16:15-16)

The Results  Lazarus was comforted (Lk. 16:22, 25)  The rich man was in torment (Lk. 16:23-24)  Compare with Matthew 24:46
