Ursa Minor (The little bear) By Mike Class A 1/9/06 http://photos.derickrethans.nl/album/constellations/aaa.jpg

Ursa Minor Abbreviation: U.M.I. Translation: The Lesser Bear

Ursa Minor is Visible in the northern hemisphere all year long Ursa Minor is also the little dipper and the bear is seen as the handle of the little dipper is the tail of the bear. To see this constellation you must be facing north.

Position in sky The tip of the handle is the north star or Polaris

Stars in Ursa Minor The main stars in Ursa Minor are Polaris, Yildun, Epsilon, Zeta, Eta, Beta, and Gamma The brightest star in the constellations is Polaris, and the dullest star is Kochab.

Myths her now fully-grown son Arcas was hunting in the woods when he saw a great bear which was, in fact, his own mother. As he lifted his bow and arrow to shoot her, Zeus quickly intervened, and changed Arcas into a little bear so that he immediately recognized his mother. The story has a happy ending as, lonely no more, Callisto and her son were transported to the heavens, thereafter to be known as the Ursa Major and Ursa Minor.
