Printmaking is a process that involves creating an image through stamps, stencils, etching, etc. and “printing” it onto a surface such as paper using a rolling press. NEXT PREVIOUS MAIN Image from:

Relief MENU

Relief involves creating editions from a “raised” surface and pressing onto a surface. Image from: MENU

Image from: Relief Printing can be done with wood, linoleum, or any other surfaced that can be carved away with ease. The objective is to carve away an image into your surface, roll on India Ink(or other form of printing ink), and press the stamp onto your paper. MENU

Basic Supplies Barren for “pressing” if you don’t have a press Gouge for carving Linoleum or other thickened surface “Printing”Ink Ink Roller Image from: Alexandra Beck MENU

Intaglio MAIN MENU

Intaglio prints require the artist to carve or etch an image into a printing plate and press it onto a surface. Image from: MENU

Image from: Intaglio (etching, engraving, aquatint, etc.) is generally done using a metal plate such as zinc or copper. Your image needs to be thoroughly “scratched” into the plate. Line variations affect the darkness of shading and the sharpness of the print. MENU

Basic Supplies All images from: Etching Tools Preservative Chemicals Oil based Ink Plates for Etching **You will also need a barren if you do not have a press** MENU

Process The ink must be spread thoroughly (using a card or some form of straight edge) into the plate in order to get into the etching lines. You then take a cloth and wipe away the ink on the plate. This way only the ink in the lines will appear on the paper. It won’t catch the ink in the etched lines so don’t worry. When you reveal your print, you should see the etched markings from your plate on the paper. All images from: MAIN **After making your etches, soak your plate in the preservative chemicals. They will protect the plate etchings from fading due to age and use.** MENU

Serigraphy MAIN MENU

Serigraphy or “silkscreen printing” unlike relief and intaglio is a type of silk printing, requiring the use of stencils. MENU

Serigraphy (made famous by Andy Warhol) was a very common method used for artistic advertising. This is a very well- known media used in clothing image design. Image from: MENU

Basic Supplies Stretched Silk Screen mesh and stand for your prints Squeegee for spreading ink Screen Printing Ink **You also need material for your stencil such as bristol board paper or plastic sheets such as acetate.** MENU

Image from: Process MAIN Prepare your screen and tape off the sides to prevent ink from escaping. Have your stencil ready and place it underneath your screen and over your paper. Place a layer of ink on one end of the screen and use the squeegee to spread the ink down the length of your print. Lift the screen and reveal your print. MENU
