Blind Faith Velan- “Please come along and see it, and if you can tell us why it [cow] is dead, it will relieve our minds. A learned man like you should see and tell” (72)

Blind Faith “The Swami knew so little of cattle, dead or alive, that it was of no practical use his going to see this one, but since they wanted it, he asked Velan to be seated for a few moments, and went down with him”(72)

Blind Faith “It must have been bitten by a poisonous insect. This was a comforting explanation… this piece of interpretation by the Swamiji pleased the public.” (73)

Miscommunication What Raju says: “ Say that I’ll not eat… till they are good” (77). ➔ reverse psychology ➔ Raju stated that he will fast because he thought the villagers would worry about him and stop fighting

What Velan’s brother tells the villagers: “Tell your brother not to bring me any more food. If I don’t eat...then everything will be all right” (79). ● Velan’s brother didn’t want to get in trouble ● vague diction leads to misinterpretation ● which ultimately starts dramatic irony

“This Mangala is a blessed country to have a man like Swami in our midst. No bad thing will come to us as long as he is with us. He is Mahatma” (79) ● the misunderstanding increases as the villagers believes that Raju is a saint ● increases Raju internal conflict -

Dramatic Irony “Raju was waiting for his usual gifts and food. He had no doubt… but he hoped they would bring him other fare...He had a craving for bonda” (80) ● combination of blind faith of his followers boosting his confidence o leads to the dramatic irony because of his assumption

“He felt happy that he had after all achieved something, and save the village” (81) ● Truth that both groups think he saved them but in different ways

“Raju was puzzled by what he heard. But he thought that such high and bombastic well- wishing was their habit and idiom and that they were only thanking him for putting enough sense into their heads not to go on with their fighting” (82) ● He does not understand their over the top gratitude and his own confidence is once again boosted
