Physical Properties (Card 1 Front)

Physical Properties (Card 1 Back) A characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance. The senses can be used to observe physical properties: Color, shape, size, etc… Used to identify unknown substances. Mass, Volume and Density are Physical Properties

PP – States of Matter (Card 2 Front)

States of Matter (Card 2 – Back) The physical form of matter. Most matter exists as a solid, liquid, or gas.

PP – Electrical Conductivity (Card 3 Front)

Electrical Conductivity (Card 3 Back) A measure of how well electric currents move through a substance. Conductors are made of materials that electricity can flow through easily. Examples: Metals, Water, People and Animals, Trees Insulators are materials that prevent or block the flow of electricity. Examples: Glass, Plastic, Rubber

PP – Thermal Conductivity (Card #4 Front)

Thermal Conductivity (Card 4 – Back) The rate at which a substance transfers heat. Thermal Conductors - materials that let heat move through them easily Example: metals Thermal Insulator - materials that do not let heat move through them easily Examples: plastics, wood, Styrofoam, fabrics

Solubility (Card 5 – Back) The ability of a substance to dissolve in another substance. Differs greatly depending on the state of matter, temperature and pressure Examples Salt is soluble in water, but it isn't soluble in oil. Cream and sugar are soluble in coffee Non Examples Sand is NOT soluble in water Oil and vinegar

Magnetic Attraction (Card 6 – Back) Magnetic attraction is when one metal attracts another metal

PP – Melting Point and Boiling Point (Card 7 – Front)

Melting and Boiling Point (Card 7 - Back) The melting point of a substance is the temperature at which it changes from a solid to a liquid. For water this is 0 degrees Celsius and 32 degrees Farenheit Metals have high melting points, Nonmetals have low melting points The boiling point of a substance is the temerature at which the substance boils. For water this is 100 degress Celsus and 212 degrees F

Chemical Properties (Card 8 – Front)

Chemical Property (Card 8 – Back) Describes the ability of a substance to change into a new substance with different properties. The ability to rust or tarnish is a chemical property. When a metal rusts or tarnishes, it changes to a different substance. Chemical properties can be identified by the changes they produce.

CP - Flammability (Card 9 – Front)

Flammability (Card 9 – Back) The ability of a substance to burn. Let’s test out some items and see if they are flammable! Like…. MR. FEILER’s DESK!!!!!!

Reactivity (Card 10 – Back) The ability of a substance to interact with another substance and form one or more new substances.
