Raisin in the sun What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore-- And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over-- like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags like a heavy load. Or does it explode?

Langston Hughes Langston Hughes was one of the most important writers and thinkers of the Harlem Renaissance, which was the African American artistic movement in the 1920s that celebrated black life and culture. Hughes's creative genius was influenced by his life in New York City's Harlem, a primarily African American neighborhood. His literary works helped shape American literature and politics. Hughes, like others active in the Harlem Renaissance, had a strong sense of racial pride.

What happens to a dream deferred? This question appears to be answered with nothing but more questions. We can answer it in different ideas of ourselves. The writer asked this question at the beginning of the poem, because he wanted to answer this question in the rest of this poem .

sun raisin dream Dry up Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? simile raisin dream shrivels up and turns dark Dry up simile sun Time and other conditions in the real life The emphasis on the sun is important because it stresses time. We measure time by the sun's movement. Like the raisin, the dream has been on hold for a long-time. Consequently, it has transformed into something very different than it once was. The visual image can be used because of the detailed description being used in the first stanza.

What explodes? The last stanza returns to the question again, but this time instead of simile, the speaker employs metaphor of an explosion. What explodes? As we all know ,bombs explode and cause great destruction. If all the other possibilities of a deferred dream are bad with some worse than others, then the last possibility is the worst. If the person whose dream is deferred loses all hope, he might “explode” with his despair. He might commit suicide, homicide—or both.

A QUESTION ABOUT RAISIN IN THE SUN The decision between principle and money is a hard decision to make, especially when you’re as hard-up as the Youngers. What do you think of their choice?
