Review: Major Grant Events Prior P.I. left. Proposal for restructured Grant submitted to NIH, and NIH accepted. New P.I. Hurricane Katrina. Restructuring implemented and operations were begun.

Mississippi replaced Mobile Infirmary as Partner Singing River Hospital was awarded an expansion grant to facilitate accrual from medical oncology and surgical oncology A med-onc P.I. added for expansn. grant Three general surgeons, a urologist, and a gynecologist added as co-investigators

Katrina Update Community still focused on rebuilding, etc. Most who had the means have rebuilt or partially rebuilt. The Hospital (SRHS) is still dealing with a disproportionate share of trauma care from the Coast, but situation improving. The number of trailers is decreasing.

Clinical Research Activities 35 studies have been opened Of these, 24 remain open to accrual Total cases screened Sept ’05 thru Jan’07 = 434 Total of 44 patients on active study patient roster, including 19 prior to CDRP Total of 25 patients since CDRP, including 12 from Keesler AFB and 13 new accruals

Patient Navigator Program Model: Navigator plus van driver. Transportation is a necessary part of our program. Documentation: Emphasis here so that program can be justified to the Hospital in the long term. Number of Pts navigated, Dec ’05 thru Jan ’07 = 237

Community Outreach Program Full time Community Outreach Nurse Generally, community leaders and community members are not ready to focus on cancer programs post Katrina We have couched a number of programs under the categories “wellness” and “stress relief” but have put in material regarding cancer prevention/detection

Community Outreach Program(cont) A total of 37 programs have been presented A total of 1470 community members have been reached

Future Plans We are hoping to develop an investigator- initiated study centered around the Patient Fast Fact Sheets. Increased participation of surgical specialties in protocols. The expansion grant provides those physicians with increased research support.
