ca. 1450: Johannes Gutenberg During the Middle Ages books had to be hand copied on parchment. Impact: increased output and accuracy and decreased the cost. Inexpensive printed materials opportunities for literacy & learning and encouraged talented people to write. changed-the-world

Italian Wrote The Book of the Courtier- a guidebook for those at court (how to dress, behave, etc)

15th Century: Florence came under the control (rule) of the Medici family. Originally a merchant family who got rich in the wool trade and then expanded into banking. The Medici's (especially Lorenzo the Magnificent, ) became outstanding patrons of Renaissance Art. Cosimo Lorenzo
