Fault noun When you are at fault, you have made a mistake.

Fault After the argument both people often think it is the other person’s fault that the argument started in the first place.

Fault When there is a car accident, the police have to determine who was at fault.

Fault Whose fault is it? Mom left a some food on the table. The dog grabbed it and ate it all. Whose fault is it? Ron was driving too fast on the ice. His car slid into another car. Whose fault is it? Jordan didn’t turn in his homework because he left it on the floor and his baby sister scribbled on it. Whose fault is it? Sara’s sister hit her so she hit her sister back. Sara’s mom saw her do it and she got in trouble. Whose fault is it?

Borrow verb When you borrow something, you use something that someone else owns for a while. You should give it back when you are finished with it.

Borrow You can borrow books from the library.

Borrow Sometimes you might need to borrow money from someone. You should be sure to pay it back when you can.

Borrow The antonym of borrow is lend. This lady is lending money to her friend. Her friend is borrowing the money from her.

Borrow We also use the word borrow in math. But we do not return the number we borrow!

Local adjective Local refers to the area nearby you. Our local area is Fremont.

Local Our local library is called Keene Memorial. It is on Broad Street near Linden School.

Local Scott Getzschmann is the local mayor.

Local Local can also be a noun. It means someone who is from the area you are talking about. Mrs. Schultz and Miss LaBrie are locals. They are from Fremont. Mrs. Lowe is not a local. She has only lived here for nine years.

Genuine adjective If someone is genuine, they don’t pretend to be different than they really are. An antonym of genuine is fake.

Genuine This woman is genuine. She is always kind to others, not just when she wants something from them.

Genuine This woman is not being genuine. She is pretending to be sad so she will get what she wants.

Genuine Another word for genuine is real. It can be used to describe many things such as jewels. This is a genuine piece of gold. Advertisers often use the word genuine to describe things they are selling.

Genuine Genuine or not? Your sister pretends she is hurt so your mom will give her some attention. A friend makes a promise and then doesn’t keep it. A friend who is always nice to you and helps you. A coat made of fake fur. A teacher who treats all her students the same.

Apologize verb When you apologize, you are sorry for something you have done. You say “I’m sorry.”

Apologize The girl wrote a note to apologize for what she had done.

Apologize verb Apology noun Apologetic adjective This little girl is sorry for breaking her mother’s lamp. She wants to apologize to her mother. Her mother will accept her apology because she can tell that her daughter is feeling very apologetic.

Apologize Think of a time you had to apologize for something. Turn and tell your partner. Start by saying: “Once I had to apologize for…”

Insisted past tense verb When someone insists that you do something, they are demanding that you do it.

Insisted This mom insists that her daughter apologize for talking back.

Insisted The girl does not want to eat, but her parents insist that she has to before she can leave the table.

Insisted What is something that your parents insist you do? Turn and tell your partner. Start by saying: “My parents insist that I….”

Proof noun If you have proof of something happening, you have evidence that it is true.

Proof There is no scientific proof that aliens are real.

Proof Before you say that your brother did something wrong, you should have some proof.

Slimy adjective Slimy means slippery.

Slimy This salamander feels very slimy.

Slimy The mud was so slimy that the man fell down while running the race.

Reference adjective A reference book is used to find information about something.

Reference There are many reference books in the library, such as a dictionary, a thesaurus, and encyclopedias.

Reference Encyclopedias are good reference books when you want to find out about something quickly.

Fainted past tense verb If someone has fainted, they have passed out.

Fainted This man fainted when he heard he had won a million dollars.

Fainted The woman laid down on the couch after she fainted.
