Consumer Rights Respond in writing: Have you ever been dissatisfied with a purchase? What was it? Why were you dissatisfied with it? Did you take steps to fix the problem? If you are dissatisfied with a purchase, what can you do about it?

Consumerism Defined Consumerism: a movement begun in the 1960s to educate buyers about the purchases they make and to demand better and safer products from manufacturers. Respond in writing: Do you believe the products you buy are safe? If so, how/why do you believe as you do; if not, why not?

Five Consumer Rights 1.Right to safety Examples: 2.Right to be informed Examples: 3.Right to choose Examples: 4.Right to be heard Examples: 5.Right to compensation Examples:

Five Consumer Rights Respond in writing: What effects do you think “consumer rights” had on businesses? Do you support or oppose “consumer rights;” either way, why?

Consumer Responsibilities 1.Report the problem 2.State the problem, and suggest a fair solution 3.Include details and receipts of the purchase 4.Describe action(s) you have taken to fix the problem 5.Keep records of your attempts to resolve the problem 6.Allow reasonable time for the problem to be solved 7.Keep copies of written/ ed communications 8.Keep cool... Losing your temper will not resolve things

Consumer Responsibilities Read and then respond in writing: You buy camping gear. The next weekend, you go camping and it begins storming overnight; you discover (the hard way) that your brand-new tent has a leak! Describe – in detail – the steps you actually would take to resolve this issue with either the retailer or the manufacturer...

Rights vs. Responsibilities Respond in writing: Using a PDD (you can partner if you don’t have a PDD), find out which agencies in the state of Oregon handle consumer complaints. Choose one of the agencies you find, and write a sample complaint letter to them incorporating the 5 rights and 8 responsibilities.
