The five basic skills for reading and writing are: Learning the letter sounds Learning letter formation Blending Identifying sounds in words Spelling the tricky words

Storylines and Actions Learning the /m/ sound: Storyline – Discussion about favourite meal Action – rub tummy and say mmmmmm Objects that begin with /m/ Other words containing the /m/ sound

Letter Formation In the air, on backs, in sand Using playdoh, counters, magnetic letters On the board, painting On paper Possibilities endless!

Digraphs Some sounds (digraphs) are represented by two letters Sh sh-i-p ee f-ee-t ai r-ai-n Sound out the digraph, not the individual letters.

Spelling Spell through hearing sounds in words. Initial sound, end sound, middle sound Begin with three-letter words Praise good attempts

Tricky Words Irregular spelling, cannot be read by blending I go they said was Many high frequency words are ‘tricky’ words
