Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

Abraham Maslow  Developed hierarchy in  Describes individual motivation and the human condition.

Survival Needs  Base of pyramid must be established before proceeding to higher levels.  Physiological, Safety, Belongingness and Love, Self-esteem.  Individual cannot survive without meeting these needs.  Long-term deprivation can cripple/lead to psychosis.

Personal Needs  Mid-level tier of the pyramid relates to those of the individual.  Need to know and understand others and one’s self.  Aesthetic need relates to one’s purpose and the meaning of life.

Wisdom and Transcendence  Upper tier of pyramid relates to fulfillment and realization of individual and others’ abilities as well as needs.  Connection with something beyond the ego, and endurance beyond one’s own physical life.
