The Sustainable Blumine Island Program

Strengths Isolated Pest Free Variety of forest Established tracks Wide range of native birds Ability to enhance the island, mould ability to do what is best for the island Natural

Weaknesses Weeds Overgrown Tracks Blocked Water tanks…Sandflies Deer can get on island Chance of introduced species Needs more manpower Needs longer camps = get more done

Ecotourism Could be possible if there was a permanent ranger to monitor the tourists. Limits to the number of people allowed on the island Money from tourists goes back into conservation on the island Strict quarantine for gear, people, clothes, footwear etc so that new seeds aren’t introduced What’s the point in having the island if it people can’t enjoy it? Would give more support for conservation work – ranger and money

Sustainable Future Keep camps going Pest and weed free Ranger to monitor tourism and protect the island

Highlights… Swimming, Becoming a Whanau, Living without Technology (TV Cell Phones etc), Nature, Learning about the Biodiversity of the Island- how everything relies on everything else to create a strong ecosystem (love…), Historic relics on the island

What we will take away… Full experience, Knowledge, appreciation of the environment, clear head, teamwork, leadership, friends, stronger understanding, love/hate relationship with the Whanau Respect for… Nature, environment, others, life, ourselves…

Wairua… Planting the seed, feeling the trees, being one/understanding nature, kaitiakitanga of Oruawairua, atmosphere, teambuilding bonding environment, open to ideas and other people, building off each others energy, keeping it real

How this will affect our future… Help us think more before we act, giving us more knowledge and respect for the environment, giving us motivation to do our part, possible future pathways.

Team working… understanding more how our actions effect other people…
