Moses’ Intercession for Israel Exodus 32:33:6 Main truth: God’s leaders are developed through times alone with GOD and thru challenging circumstances

I. SIN IN THE CAMP Exodus 32:1-6 Daily Questions: Exodus 32:1-14 I. SIN IN THE CAMP Exodus 32:1-6 The Insufficiency of Miracles to Guarantee Faithfulness Some tried to win people for Christ through miraculous display of God’s power (healing diseases, driving-out demons) Miracle of Inner change, or rebirth: the Word of God is taught in the power of the Spirit of God Israelites had seen the power of God in many miracles in so short of time, the Plagues, the passage through the Red Sea, miracles in the desert, BUT NONE of this was enough to keep them TRUE TO GOD.

I. SIN IN THE CAMP Exodus 32:1-6 Daily Questions: Exodus 32:1-14 I. SIN IN THE CAMP Exodus 32:1-6 The Problems with Images “images help us to focus our minds on God” Idols diminish God’s glory since nothing created can ever capture the glory of intangible God. God gave us Jesus, the living GOD and the exact representation o f His Being. Images mislead the worshiper. Aaron didn’t intend the result (32:5) Sin establishes a hold on the one sinning that is hard to shake off. Identical sin committed in Jeroboam’s time (1Kings 12:28)

Idolatry can not be dedicated to the worship of God. Principle#1 Idolatry can not be dedicated to the worship of God.

II. The CONVERSATION BETWEEN MOSES & GOD Exodus 32:7-14 Daily Questions: Exodus 32:1-14 II. The CONVERSATION BETWEEN MOSES & GOD Exodus 32:7-14 Moses didn’t know what was happening in the camp. But God did and He told Moses. As leaders, we may not know what was happening to our members, but God will give us discernment to find out. He will reveal and lead us to knowing, as we spend time with Him and ask Him. Any experience you would want to share?

Moses’ Intercession for Israel Exodus 32:33:6 Main truth: God’s leaders are developed through times alone with GOD and thru challenging circumstances

II. The CONVERSATION BETWEEN MOSES & GOD Exodus 32:7-14 Daily Questions: Exodus 32:1-14 II. The CONVERSATION BETWEEN MOSES & GOD Exodus 32:7-14 A. Moses didn’t know what was happening in the camp. But God did and He told Moses. The Corruption of the People 32:7-8 They were ascribing their liberation to the idol A new Abraham, A new Israel (9-10) He will kill all those who had come out of Egypt with Moses but would begin again with Moses B. Moses Intercession for the People 32:11-14 verse 11: why should your anger burn against your people when you brought them out of Egypt? In 32:7-8, God said to Moses, Go down because your people .. Neither Moses or God wanted to be identified with the Israelites in their rebellious state.

II. The CONVERSATION BETWEEN MOSES & GOD Exodus 32:7-14 Daily Questions: Exodus 32:1-14 II. The CONVERSATION BETWEEN MOSES & GOD Exodus 32:7-14 B. Moses Intercession for the People 32:11-14 2 Arguments of Moses: What will the Egyptian say? What about your agreement with Abraham? God listened to Moses and judgment to people was restrained (at least for the moment) v.14 what intercession would do for the ladies God has entrusted to you? Have we ever appeal to God for them?

Principle#2 God’s leaders must intercede on behalf of their people for the sake of God’s Name.

III. MOSES’ ATTEMPT TO DEAL WITH SIN Daily Questions: Exodus 32:15-29 III. MOSES’ ATTEMPT TO DEAL WITH SIN V19 , the stone tablets, breaking them to pieces at the foot of the mountain. Though done in anger, it was a significant gesture because the people are doing just that. They were breaking the 10 commandments. What was Moses to do now? What could he do now to turn them back to God?

III. MOSES’ ATTEMPT TO DEAL WITH SIN Daily Questions: Exodus 32:15-29 III. MOSES’ ATTEMPT TO DEAL WITH SIN Destruction of the Calf Burned it, ground it up, mixed with water and made the people drink it. Rebuke of Aaron Aaron excuses, blame people and Moses Aaron’s weakness: anxious to please people than please God. Call and Commission of the People Commissioned them to execute judgment on people V27,to kill even brother/sister (Matthew 10:37) IN THE SERVICE OF GOD ALL OTHER LOYALTIES MUST BE FOREVER SECONDARY.

IV. MOSES’ SUBLIME OFFER (32:30-32) Daily Questions: Exodus 32:30-33:6 IV. MOSES’ SUBLIME OFFER (32:30-32) Moses: “Oh, what a great sin these people have committed!...But now , please forgive their sin. But if not, then blot me out of the book you have written. God: “No, I will destroy this people and start again …making a new nation from you” Moses: “No rather destroy me and save them” Can we say the same thing to God for our members?

VI. GOD’S SOBERING RESPONSE Daily Questions: Exodus 32:30-33:6 VI. GOD’S SOBERING RESPONSE God said He would not destroy the people but would honor His promise to the patriarchs to give the Israelites their own land. He even says that He will send an angel before them to drive out those people currently living there (verse 2) I will not go with you, because you are a stiff-necked people and I might destroy you on the way (verse 3) They mourned not just because of the consequences of their sin but because of the distance their sin put between them & God.

God’s Word can bring GOD’s people to repentance. Principle#3 God’s Word can bring GOD’s people to repentance.

Application No excuse for Wrong It is always wrong to do wrong. Circumstances must not be taken into consideration. If the act is wrong, you must repudiate it saying, “How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?” Genesis 39:9 Are there patterns of behavior in your life? Consequences of sin The consequences of sin are always more serious than first supposed. Satan told Eve: you will not surely die (Gen 3:4). Through that one act, misery & death passed upon human race.

Application Importance of Intercession Response to the Savior If you love people you will intercede for them, just as Moses did. Your prayers are not without value. God hears them and answers them. (Give Ate tess “our Moses”, your prayer requests!) So pray for other people, plead for the lost, for the sinners. James 5:16, the prayers of righteous persons are “powerful and effective”. Response to the Savior There is only one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus (1 timothy 2:5)
