1 PD3 P rofessional D evelopment D ecisions Using D ata

“ Evaluating the impact of Professional Development is more complex than evaluating the effectiveness of a new drug or medical treatment. There are more intervening steps.” Dr. Pendred Noyce

3 PD3 Workshop Goals Participants will: Become familiar with PD3 Handheld Basics Become familiar with PD3 Math/Science and Reading Tool Practice using PD3 Math/Science and Reading Tool Sign-out Palm (if new to PD3) Register to use PD3 (if new to PD3)

44 What is PD3 ? A professional development planning tool and database that will: Improve professional development decisions by looking at strategies teachers are using in mathematics, science and reading Increase the relevance of professional development Enhance the role of school-based and district-level instructional teams Provide a vehicle to track, over time, the impact of professional development on classroom practice

Classroom visit data collection software used on a handheld computer (Palm, Windows Mobile) An online database that enables users to generate up-to-date reports based on aggregated classroom visit data PD3 online reports that guide a school’s or district’s professional development decisions for teachers within grade levels or subject areas

What is PD3 ? As a tool for a Professional Development Specialist or an Instructional Leader or District Professional Development Coordinator …. Source of leading data Springboard for relevant conversations Improve PD decisions by looking at classroom practice Tracks the impact of PD

8 is NOT intended for teacher evaluation purposes! No teacher IDs are used. A PD3 visit

9 During the visit: Identify instructional strategies Identify mathematics, science and reading content Describe level of student engagement and learning environment After the visit: Review visit data with teacher (optional) Analyze aggregated data at school level PD3 Steps

Highlighting the Key Points 10

28 Validity of PD3 data is tied to the quality and quantity of the classroom visits. Using Data to Inform Decisions To strengthen validity:   Visit wide variety of classrooms   Conduct multiple visits throughout the year, varying times   Conduct visits at the beginning, middle, and end of class period   Frequent visits to see all key areas being taught OR visit frequently during a specific instructional area (comprehension)

Using the PD3 Data Display Investigations – Choose Parameters

Investigations – View Graphs What were the responses for questions about the level of student engagement? YOUR SCHOOL

Investigations – View Graphs What were the responses for questions about the classroom environment? YOUR SCHOOL

Drilling Down The snapshots become the big picture… YOUR SCHOOL

The Next Steps… 23 Looking at the Learning Environment

“The Forest” The PD3 tool takes all of the intricate details that we may notice each time we visit a classroom and weaves them together. Presenting data with the big picture in mind. One snapshot alone, like a puzzle piece can not possible tell the entire story.
