Final Jeopardy Pick one of the following events or people, explain their idea and explain how it changed society. Heliocentric Theory Napoleonic Code Wollenstonecraft Montesquieu in American Govt Abolishment of Three Estate Post Civil War England Dec. of the Rights of Man

Final Jeopardy Answer Post Civil War England: Enlightenment philosophers Locke, Montesquieu, and Voltaire influenced England after the Civil War. Locke believed the government has a responsibility to protect individuals' life, liberty, and property England created a Bill of Rights which insured those rights. Montesquieu believed power should be shared among different groups/individuals so one person would not get too much power. After the English Civil War, power was shared between the monarch and parliament. Eventually England would add a cabinet and a Prime Minister. Voltaire believed in freedom of speech and religion, this is also established in the English Bill of Rights which was instituted under William and Mary after the Civil War. Dec. of the Rights of Man: Based on enlightenment ideas this states that All people equal before law, No taxation without representation, Similar to American Bill of Rights, it changed French society from the estates system to a classless society. Heliocentric Theory: Based on reason and logic, Galileo and Copernicus believed in the heliocentric theory which challenged the Church’s geocentric belief that the earth is the center of the universe. This theory made people challenged the church. The church started to lose power and people starting using the scientific method to prove ideas. Napoleonic Code: New law code based on Enlightenment ideas – equality (Locke – life, liberty and property), religious freedom (Voltaire), gave French religious freedom and made every man equal. Montesquieu’ s ideas: of balancing power between the branches of govt. It is part of the US constitution and today there are still checks and balances among the three branches. Example: Pres. can veto Congress, the Supreme Ct. can declare a law or presidents actions unconstitutional, Congress can override a veto. Wollenstonecraft: Believed in equality for everyone regardless of sex, enlightenment philosophers believed everyone was equal and today we see this in our society- women have equal rights Abolishment of Three Estate: The enlightenment philosophies believed all men were created equal. The old regime in France created three estates. The first estate, the clergy and the second estate the noblemen were not taxed where the third estate, the commoners were. The Enlightenment beliefs inspired the third estate to attempt to change the estates system in France. The Constitution of 1791 was based on these enlightenment ideas. It created a Constitutional Monarchy, Guaranteed basic rights, allowed all property owning males could vote, and all legislators get a vote
