Conventions Review

A phrase cannot be used as a complete sentence.

On its own, why is a subordinate clause a sentence fragment? Although a subordinate clause contains a subject and a verb, it has one word that hints at a question which is left unanswered. It doesn’t make sense alone.

The moon shines through my window unfortunately it’s brightness keeps me awake.

Revise the following sentence fragment: Listening to music.

Listening to music is my favorite thing to do. She was listening to music while writing a paper. Listening to music and singing at the top of her lungs, Mrs. Brown did not realize her students could hear her through the classroom walls.

You can use a semicolon between two independent clauses, even if you don’t add a conjunctive adverb.

True or false: To fix a fused sentence, add a comma. Adding a comma only makes it a comma splice. To fix, you can: Add both a comma AND a coordinating conjunction Add a period to split up into two sentences Add a semicolon Add a semicolon AND a conjunctive adverb

Which of the following use correct punctuation? The clocks on the wall stopped ticking, time stood still. I am tired and my lids are heavy, however I will not rest until this paper is finished. The air was frigid and cold; however, their coats kept them warm. I wanted my secret crush to ask me to prom; but I guess I will have to go with my neighbor. All of the above

Match the following: Phrase Fragment if used alone Independent clause A run-on without punctuation Fused sentence Lacks a subject and a verb Comma splice Complete sentence Subordinate clause A run-on that uses a comma

Which is correct? My professor is intelligent; I've learned a lot from her. My professor is intelligent. I've learned a lot from her. My professor is intelligent; moreover, I've learned a lot from her. My professor is intelligent, and I've learned a lot from her. All of the above

Which is correct? Sometimes, people’s opinions really get to me. That assignment is not mine, so it must be her’s. The baby giraffes’ tongue was purple and tough. During the 04’ school year, fashion trends included sparkly jeans, platform sandals, and polo shirts. I ate three mango’s and I feel sick.

Matching I want someone who is romantic, I want to be loved again. Subordinate clause fragment I can’t find my other shoe I remember kicking it off in my room. Phrase fragment Dancing through life. Comma splice My dog ate my donut when I wasn’t looking. Fused sentence If you love something. Independent clause
