Tate gallery

In 1897, was opened Tate gallery, which is considered one of the largest collections of English art of the little ice age (16-20th centuries).

The gallery has received its name in honor of its Creator - sir Henry Tate. Being British sugar king, he supported a number of talented artists. A huge number of works of painters Henry bought for myself. Soon his collection took pride of place in the gallery of British art, which has over sixty thousand splendid works.

Over sixty thousand works of art: paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints are stored in the national Museum of London, the Tate gallery.

According to the guidebook through the gallery of 1897, the beginning of the collection of sir Henry Tate put three pictures, one of which is «Thursday» U. D. Sadlera. Initially, the gallery of paintings by British artists born after 1790.

Classic English painting remained in an old building, but the exhibition was named Tate Britain.

In may 2000, in a converted former Bankside power station Power Station on the South Bank of the Thames, opposite the Cathedral of St. Paul, opened a contemporary art gallery Tate Modern (architects Herzog & de Meuron). After that, the «parent» gallery was remained into the Tate Britain.
