Plot Elements Write what you know about the following: Exposition: Conflict: Rising Action: Climax: Falling Action: Resolution/ Denouncement:

Plot Elements Introduction (Exposition): Introduces setting, characters, and conflict. Conflict: The problem that is typically introduced in the introduction Internal conflicts: Problems characters have within themselves. Characters must make a tough decision that effects them personally. For example: In the novel/movie, The Hunger Games, should Katniss run away with Gail? She has to make a decision that’s right for her. External conflicts: Problems characters have with other characters. For example: Katniss has to participate in the Hunger Games and face the other tributes who try to kill her.

Plot Elements Introduction Continued Setting-The time and place of the story Settings can change throughout a story, but they are always important to the plot and characters For example, The Hunger Games is set during the future in District 12 at the beginning of the story, but then the characters travel to the Capitol.

Plot Elements Rising Action: Presents complications that intensify the conflicts. For example: Katniss goes through training at the Capital. Katniss and Peeta make an impression at the opening ceremony of the games by appearing to be on fire. Katniss enters the arena Katniss befriends Rue Etc…

Plot Elements Climax: The turning point of a story. Outcome of conflict becomes clear. For example: The moment when Katniss and Peeta decide to “eat” the poisonous berries.

Plot Elements Falling Action: Eases suspense and reveals the outcome of climax. Shows how the main characters resolve conflict. For example: The game maker decides that both Katniss and Peeta can be winners of the games.

Plot Elements Resolution/Denouncement: Reveals the final outcome and ties up loose ends. Katniss and Peeta have their final interviews and are able to return home.

Foreshadowing Writer gives hints or clues in early scenes to suggest events that will occur later. What does it do? How can you recognize it?

Flashbacks Interrupt the main action to describe earlier events Shows how past events led up to the present situation Provides background information about a character or event
