Presentation transcript:

The project will conduct an investigation into the town of Fort Kent and the impacts that the revolution of that town has left on its people and culture. The community of Fort Kent has open its doors to welcome many changes to its infrastructures and ethnicity. This project will be used to present data on the changes that have occurred in the community and the effects that it has on Fort Kent.

The town of Fort Kent which was formerly known as “La Grande Décharge” is located in the Aroostook county, which is found in Northern Maine, at the mouth where the Fish River Valley joins the St. John River. The town was discovered in 1829, by an Acadian-French refugee by the name Joseph Nadeau (José). The town was however renamed in 1840 to Fort Kent in honor of Governor Edward Kent, who was elected governor of Maine in that year.

The town stood as home for many soldiers who were involved in the dispute of boarder between the U.S and Canada. The town now uses most of the infrastructures that were built in the time of the war as historic sites for tourist. Some of these buildings include:  The Blockhouse  The “Barrack”, which later became the “Dickey House”  The Mills  The International bridge

In the completion of this project I had difficulties obtaining specific information about the town of Fort Kent, although there were many historic events and buildings in the town. Most of the information that was received at first were specific to Acadian activities that occurred in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

The project was helpful as in polished my mind on a few things that I did not know about Fort Kent and it also gave me a wider understanding of the rich French culture in the town. The research also helped me to better identify places in Fort Kent that are historical landmarks as well as it gave me some background information on the University at which I am currently a student.

From this research some of the things that I learned about Fort Kent includes: Who the first settler in Fort Kent was and when he settled there. The construction of The Mill by Mr. Daniel Savage in The construction of the Blockhouse in 1840 by the Maine troops The bloodless war between the U.S and Canadian government over the boundaries which identified who had rights to log in the area

From this project, I learned that I should start my assignments on time, so that I have adequate time to conduct researches. From this project I also learned more about the revolution of Fort Kent
