A quick MOSAIC re-cap… MOSAIC is a program that consists of projects that empower individuals to be agents of change, reach out, and involve as many people as possible. Each project is based on CISV’s educational content and is developed by local chapters worldwide.

where MOSAIC meets chapter development Mosaic is a program of CISV, like village, interchange, etc, but if we think of mosaic not as an additional program that chapters must take on, but rather a tool that chapters can use to improve the quality of their existing programs and continue to grow, then exciting possibilities emerge… There are several fundamental elements of Mosaic that contribute directly to the development of chapters…

participation low cost participation (inclusivity) Hosting Mosaic projects regularly motivates and creates positive group feelings among participants, increasing participation in all chapter activities. Education activities provide participants with an opportunity to acquire a better understanding of CISV. Additionally, members that actively participate in Mosaic projects will develop the skills, knowledge and desire to contribute to the chapter While international programs are often restricted to those who can afford the travel costs, Mosaic offers the opportunity to be part of CISV’s educational programs at little to no cost. This addresses the priority of the organization to find ways to be more economically inclusive.

CISV identity in the community leadership development In many cases, especially when collaborating with a like-minded organization, Mosaic will help to develop an identity for CISV in the broader local community. If this visibility is positive then a chapter stands to benefit in many ways such as fundraising, recruiting board members, and a broader pool of participants for international programs. Mosaic offers a continuous opportunity for leadership development inside and outside CISV. Developing quality leaders who are prepared to approach conflict and facilitate processes within society is one of CISV’s goals. CISV also needs quality leadership in order to increase the quality and effectiveness of our programs and administration.

cooperation within the chapter (adult-junior collaboration!) understanding of CISV principles Unlike international programs (even ones hosted locally) Mosaic provides the unique opportunity for all members of a chapter to participate in the planning and running of an educational program. By giving members the chance to be part of the process a sense of community will be built, which will increase motivation and cooperation among members/ volunteers. Mosaic is also a unique space where adults and juniors can collaborate on initiatives together. Hosting Mosaic projects supports the understanding of CISV’s educational principles and its programmes and structures inside and outside of local chapters. Recognizing CISV as not only a summer travel organization, but as an organization that provides ongoing, effective peace education programming is extremely important to the growth of chapters and of the organization.

Some things to think about… Utilize the resources you have available What is YOUR chapter equipped to do? What do you ALREADY do that might become the basis for a Mosaic project… Start small! A mosaic project does not have to be a huge endeavour Be Creative. Be Experimental! Mosaic is a new and evolving program. Use its resources and structures to explore new and exciting places for CISV! Use the National & International Resources! Both the national committee and the international committee have lots of resources and people ready to help develop your program!
