Better, Cheaper & Faster In the last 35 years in managing employees, no one has ever explicitly told me what a supervisor’s fundamental responsibility is. The goal that will guide, help you set, and monitor the behaviors that will get you where you need to go.

Better, Cheaper & Faster Fundamental Expectations from Management High Production Low Cost High Quality …and have FUN!

Better, Cheaper & Faster What are you trying to do? – Your Leadership Goals How do we get there? – Developing your Leadership Skills.

Better, Cheaper & Faster High Production, Low Cost, High Quality What are your priorities/goals as a manager? To show them who is the boss? To be always right? To know every technical detail about your department? To make all decisions and approvals? To manage every single detail? To be liked by everyone? To be the ever seeing productivity police?

Better, Cheaper & Faster High Production, Low Cost, High Quality What are your priorities/goals as a manager? To enhance productivity? To produce the best product/service? To meet or beat schedule? To empower your employees? To have employee satisfaction and a daily sense of accomplishment? Establish Trust? To have fun?

Better, Cheaper & Faster We need a better way of managing The traditional way: POLC Planning Organizing Leading & Controlling focused and emphasized the POC part and too little on the ‘Leading’ part. We need new skills. We must replace Authority with positive influence & persuasion.

Managers vs Leaders Managers have employees. Leaders win followers. Managers react to change. Leaders create change. Managers have good ideas. Leaders implement them. Managers communicate. Leaders persuade. Managers direct groups. Leaders create teams. Managers try to be heroes. Leaders make heroes. Managers take credit. Leaders take responsibility. Managers are focused. Leaders create shared focus. Mgrs. exercise power. Leaders develop power with people.

Managers must be Leaders – Leadership and management must go hand in hand. – Employees need their managers not just to assign tasks but to define purpose. – Managers must organize workers, not just to maximize efficiency, but to nurture skills, develop talent and inspire results.

My way or the Highway We need to move from: Supervisor Focused Dominant Technical Skills Stability ‘Telling’ Skills Personal Results Personal Problem Solving Narrow & Linear Communication Motivation by fear Autocratic Decision making To: Team Focused Supportive Facilitator Skills Positive Change ‘Listening’ Skills Shared Results Team Problem Solving Broader & Horizontal Communication Motivation by Recognition, Pride and Personal Development Participative Decision making

How Better, Cheaper & Faster What to do: Talk straight Extend trust Be accountable Deal w/issues ‘head on’ Keep your commitments Listen to understand Deliver results (not promises or excuses) Show respect Clarify expectations Make things right (apologize) Create transparency Be loyal Improve (get better at what you do)
