Cont’ House Keeping ZERO TOLERANCE with assistant coaches. NYS Mod & App. III, Section 1.b (p. 107)

Cont’ House Keeping Keep your focus:  Player control/team control = NO SHOTS  On all dead ball situations, stay focused on the status of the ball …  Throw-in situation (on spot vs. running the baseline)  Awarding free-throw shots (shooter, # of shots)

Modified Rules Hand-out 9 th grade teams -  ALL Offenses and Defenses Allowed  No shot clock and NO 3point shot 7 th and 8 th grade teams -  No shot clock or 3 point shot and or double teaming or zone defenses allowed.  Pressing allowed in the last 2 min of each quarter. (If up by 10 or more points = NO PRESS.)

Modified Game Format All Quarters = 7 minutes Overtime = 3 minutes If still tied = SUDDEN VICTORY. (ALL OVERTIME PERIODS ARE 3 MINUTES)

Modified Game Format 4 Quarters – less then 12 players 5 periods = 12 or more players Halftime after 2 period 3 rd, 4 th and 5 th periods (10 th team foul = 1:1 and on the 13 th foul = 2 shots) with an additional full time out

Elbow Contact: Officials are being reminded that there can be incidental contact with the elbow above or below the shoulders. Not all contact with the elbow is a foul regardless of where it makes contact.

Elbow Rule Myths These are all FALSE statements. Every time a player is bleeding because of contact to the head it is a foul. FALSE Every time there is contact of any kind to the head it is a foul. FALSE

(Con’t) Elbow Rule Myths The rules committee wants officials to call an flagrant 1 personal foul on all contact to the head. FALSE When a player runs into an elbow it is always a foul. FALSE

(Con’t) Elbow Rule Myths This rule only applies to contact to the head and not the neck. FALSE Contact with an elbow BELOW the neck is always an flagrant 1 or flagrant 2 personal foul. FALSE The arm area surrounding the elbow is considered the elbow. FALSE

Elbow Rule Facts The official will not be calling fouls any differently than what has been done in the past. The official’s judgment still determines what is legal/illegal contact. The National Collegiate Athletic Association, August 9, 2010

Excessive Swinging of Elbows The following shall be considered excessive swinging: a. When arm(s) and elbow(s) are swung about while using the shoulders as pivots, and the speed of the extended arm(s) and elbow(s) exceeds that of the rest of the body as it rotates on the hips or on the pivot foot; or b. When the speed and vigor with which the arm(s) and elbow(s) are swung is such that injury could result if another player were contacted

Rulings Contact occurs above the shoulders of an opponent  flagrant 1 or flagrant 2 personal foul. Contact occurs below the shoulders of an opponent  common, flagrant 1 or flagrant 2 personal foul

Crew Communcation Officiating crews must take every opportunity to communicate effectively. Of specific concern: The status of the ball  live vs. dead Administering penalties properly Try attempts in hand or in flight  offensive or defensive foul occurs

Crew Communcation The official with pertinent information must communicate with his/her partners. If the calling official needs information - ask the right questions of partner(s) to properly administer these situations.

Communcation If you have information that needs to be shared out on the court  Do not bring the information into the post game conference.

Screening The guard shall give the opponent without the ball  time and distance to avoid contact. The distance given by the opponent of the player without the ball needs NOT to be more than two strides b & c, p
