Bell Ringer Bone trivia questions – Write down your answer  1. How many bones are in the human body at adulthood?  2. Which bone is the longest and strongest in the human skeleton?  3. Which bone is the smallest and lightest in the human body?  4. What is the most commonly broken bone among adults? Children?  5. Which area of the body has the most bones?  6. How many bones are you born with?

Skeletal System Lesson 1 Introduction

Objectives Content Objective: The students will be able to compare and contrast the characteristics of various bones, by touching them, in order to determine which bone is located where on their body; demonstrated both through a class discussion and on a worksheet. Language Objective: The students will be able to dictate the medical names for the bones, using the powerpoint as reference, while discussing where each bone belongs in the body with a partner and with the class, identified through teacher observation.

Finding a Partner Activity Expectation: You will keep the card that you are given. Directions: Find the person with the same named bone.  Example – If your card says femur you will find the other person in the class who has a card that says femur *This will be your partner for the entire activity

Bone Activity This activity will be completed with your partner. Directions : 1. Each person will fill out their own worksheet. 2. Choose a box to start at 3. Reach your hand in the box without looking at the bone 4. On your worksheet, write down the characteristics and their location that you feel.  Examples: Rounded at end of bone; indent at the end of the bone in the middle  YOU NEED AT LEAST 5 Characteristics on your sheet for EACH box. 5. When you have at least 5 characteristics for that box number, find a box that nobody else is working out and repeat. You will repeat until you have each box filled in. When you Finish : 1. Using the identified characteristics, discuss with your partner, which bone you think was in each box. Write the MEDICAL NAME for the bone using the list on the projector. 2. You May Revisit a box if needed to try and identify the bone.

Class Discussion What bone (using the medical name) do you think is in box #____? What characteristic made you believe it was this bone?  Did you use previous knowledge to make the connection? Are there any additional characteristics you noticed?
