Everything we need to sustain life is enclosed in the system of our planet, just like a spaceship. Earth’s Spheres ‘The Earth as a System or a Spaceship’
Spheres of the Earth The earth is made up of four main spheres which allow us to live and function. These layers must exist in harmony and work together.

The Earth as a System Earth’s Spheres Slide 1

Earth System Science (ESS) The study of the interactions between and among events and Earth’s spheres A relatively new science (1988) Slide 2

Earth’s Sphere Atmosphere - air Hydrosphere - water Geosphere - land Biosphere - life Slide 3

Atmosphere A gaseous sphere and it envelopes the Earth, Consists of a mixture of gases composed primarily of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor. Slide 4

Hydrosphere All of the water on Earth 71% of the earth is covered by water Slide 5

Geosphere The Earth's solid surface, often called the crust of the earth or lithosphere. It includes continental and oceanic crust as well as the various layers of the Earth's interior. Slide 6

Biosphere All life on earth, including man, and all organisms. The life zone on our planet distinguishes our planet from the others in the solar system. Slide 7

Cryosphere The portion of the Earth's surface where water is in a solid form Snow or ice: includes glaciers, ice shelves, snow, icebergs, and arctic climatology Slide 8

Anthrosphere Man and his direct ancestors, hominids. The human population, it’s buildings, dams, and other constructions. Slide 9

Interconnected Spheres Spheres are closely connected Changes are often chain reactions A change in one sphere results in changes in others - called an event – Forest fire destroys plants in an area Interactions between spheres Ocean water (hydrosphere) evaporates into water vapor in the air (atmosphere) Slide 10

ESS Analysis Events – Cause-effect events – Interactions – Natural events Earthquake, hurricane, forest fires – Human caused events Oil spill, air pollution, construction Slide 11

Understanding Interactions Global implications Helps people predict outcomes Preparation for natural disasters Environmental impacts of human activities

On the back of your notes. Sphere Interactions 1. Bio & Geo 2. Bio & Hydro 3. Bio & Atmos 4. Geo & Hydro 5. Geo & Atmos 6. Hydro & Atmos

Examples. Example 1 Biosphere & Hydrosphere – A bird drinking from a lake. – Bird (bio) connected to water in lake (hydro) Example 2 Biosphere & Geosphere – A person driving a truck. – Person (bio) connected to truck (geo)

Work in group of six. 1. Form a small circle with your desk. 2. Compare your interactions with others in your group. 3. Vote on the best interactions and record them on a sheet of paper. 4. Write everyone’s name in group on paper. 5. Each group will get assigned an interaction to place on the projector.

Best interaction/connection Each group will get assigned an interaction to place on the projector.
