EERI Seminar on Next Generation Attenuation Models Validation not Verification Verification = comparison against theoretical predictions vs. Validation = comparison against observations “Role of SCEC GMSV TAG in SEISM Project,” N. Luco (USGS) April 11, 2013 SCEC Software Environment for Integrated Seismic Modeling (SEISM) Project Coordination Call

EERI Seminar on Next Generation Attenuation Models GMSV TAG “Role of SCEC GMSV TAG in SEISM Project,” N. Luco (USGS) April 11, 2013 SCEC Software Environment for Integrated Seismic Modeling (SEISM) Project Coordination Call Focused on validation in terms of “engineering metrics,” such as … –elastic response spectra (of SDoF oscillators) –inelastic response spectra (“) –multi-degree-of-freedom (MDoF) building response –response of geotechnical systems … not just

EERI Seminar on Next Generation Attenuation Models GMSV TAG SCEC Software Environment for Integrated Seismic Modeling (SEISM) Project Coordination Call “Role of SCEC GMSV TAG in SEISM Project,” N. Luco (USGS) April 11, 2013 Established to develop and implement, via collaboration between ground motion modelers and engineering users, testing/rating methodologies for simulated ground motions to be used in engineering applications. To date, TAG research has consisted of independently- proposed projects by individual PI’s, in response to general GMSV priorities in the SCEC Collaboration Plan. The SCEC Broadband Platform Validation Project is a separate effort, but it was initiated at one of the bi-annual GMSV TAG workshops and is coordinated with the TAG. The validation efforts of the SEISM project were proposed by, and will be conducted by, the GMSV TAG.

EERI Seminar on Next Generation Attenuation Models SEISM Project Validation Efforts SCEC Software Environment for Integrated Seismic Modeling (SEISM) Project Coordination Call “Role of SCEC GMSV TAG in SEISM Project,” N. Luco (USGS) April 11, 2013 Development of “validation gauntlets” for the use of simulated ground motions in 2 building code applications:  nonlinear response history analysis (NRHA) of buildings, i.e., building response simulations  site response analysis (SRA), i.e., near-surface soil response simulations Development of parallel validation gauntlets for …  inelastic single-degree-of-freedom oscillators  other geotechnical systems (?)  bridges (?) Automation of validation gauntlets via an interface to a NRHA and SRA software framework called OpenSees

EERI Seminar on Next Generation Attenuation Models Validation Gauntlets SCEC Software Environment for Integrated Seismic Modeling (SEISM) Project Coordination Call “Role of SCEC GMSV TAG in SEISM Project,” N. Luco (USGS) April 11, 2013 Each gauntlet will consist of one or more tests of the structural/ geotechnical analysis results for simulated ground motions against those for recorded ground motions. Development of each gauntlet will be led by …  Jack Baker – inelastic single-degree-of-freedom oscillators  Jonathan Stewart – geotechnical systems (including SRA)  Iunio Iervolino – buildings (NRHA, with Farzin Zareian) Automation of gauntlets will be led by Farzin Zareian. Since they will be developed collaboratively, “apples-to- apples” comparisons of ratings from gauntlets can be made.

Steps to run one set of validation exercise: 1.Login to broadband platform and order simulation ASCII files (velocity time-history) at location of actual recordings from previous events. 2.Download velocity history files to local machine. 3.Differentiate and rotate velocity files to coincide with the direction of recorded ground motions on local machine. 4.Run the waveforms from step3 into variety validation modules: 1) at waveform level, 2) at engineering intensity measures (SDOF elastic & inelastic), and 3) at engineering decision making parameters (MDOF elastic & inelastic). 5.Comparison of results using validation metrics. Current Technological Setting.

Facilitate ground motion validation exercise through automating the effort at the following levels: 1.No need to download the wave forms. Validation can be exercised on the platform. 2.Tools for differentiation and rotation of simulation will run on the platform. 3.Set of Parametric Models will be provided through which users can run sets of motions for validation at the three levels described before. i.e., waveform parameters, SDOF & MDOF with elastic & inelastic behavior. 4.Post-processing of the results and comparison of results using validation metrics that will be made available on the broadband platform. Proposed Research.
