THEMIS/GBO CDR Peer Review 4 Univ. of Calgary, Apr , 2004 Deployment Schedule Two GBOs deployed this August and October, 2004: Fort Yukon and McGrath Two GBOs deployed next Summer/Fall, 2005: Gakona and Kiana Kiana Fort Yukon 65 mlat 60 mlat McGrath Gakona

THEMIS/GBO CDR Peer Review 5 Univ. of Calgary, Apr , 2004 Statement of Work Goal This Statement of Work was released to the principal of the McGrath School and the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks in the hope of attracting candidates who can: house, operate, and maintain a THEMIS GBO, and demonstrate an educational outreach opportunity and share the related science of this effort (at an appropriate level) with their affiliated school and/or students A proposal is expected by the end of this month from the McGrath School and the We will send a similar statement of work to the school in Kiana this Fall, 2004.

THEMIS/GBO CDR Peer Review 6 Univ. of Calgary, Apr , 2004 System Requirements It is required that any proposed location of the instruments provides for: a largely unobstructed viewing over 160° hemisphere for the camera; a site clear of magnetic interference, e.g. locate the magnetometer sensor head away from iron structures and away from highways and other traffic, and electrical power, 120VAC, 60Hz, single phase power with 10A service. The typical power usage will range from 30 to 70 kW-hr per month. It is also required that the computer be continuously connected to the internet. The data bandwidth required for the observatory is about 5 MB per day. If no internet connection is available, a satellite internet dish will be provided. This dish will need to be located outside, but near the computer location.

THEMIS/GBO CDR Peer Review 8 Univ. of Calgary, Apr , 2004 Custodian Tasks Custodian of the GBO site will be paid to do several tasks Weekly Tasks: inspect site, with particular attention to dome, any visible damage or changes to site, record tasks in log file Monthly Tasks: swap out the removable hard drive and ship to either the University of California, Berkeley or to the University of Calgary, depending on the site location of the respective GBO; and file a report of tasks completed in the month On-Call Tasks: the Custodian may be requested to repair, or replace, a piece of equipment or cable that was previously inspected and found damaged; log these tasks If the Custodian is a teacher, we hope that he/she will share information about the GBO, and the THEMIS Mission, with his or her students and the school in general

THEMIS/GBO CDR Peer Review 9 Univ. of Calgary, Apr , 2004 Security and Timeline Security of GBO The location of the GBO (computer equipment, imaging camera and magnetometer), and access thereto, shall be reasonably secure and controlled by the Custodian. Period of Performance October 2004 through August 2009
